The National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Health. Their purpose is to develop a nationally consistent, evidence-based approach to the prevention and management of eating disorders in Australia. NEDC approached Bliss Media to help them talk to a young audience (16 to 22 year olds).
User research and profiling sessions revealed that talking about eating disorders with young people required a much different aproach than the technical, cold language and basic page designs currently utelised on the NEDC main site.
Additionally, it was also revealed that this audience in particular was most likely to access and consume content on mobile devices.

From an architecture prespective, information was simplified and divided into two descreet areas. The number of pages was limited by design to reinforce the accesibility of the information. Content on these pages was further simplified into easily digested chunks.
This interaction was then prototyped and tested on the audience, who predicitbly commented that they didn't like they grey. The feedback (apart from the colours) was univerally positive. With the accessible and friendly language used being one of the stars.
As the visual style from the NEDC main site tested poorly with the intended audience, a unique brand for the mini-site was developed which included language, typography and illustrations. There was a challenge in developing imagery for the site as showing pictures of people served to stereotype the illness. These stereotypes were exactly what theis site was attempting to break.
Additionally, participants in the user profiling sessions had made it clear that they would not be interested in anything "that looked like it was for kids".

The result is a site that is simple, but friendly. The illustrations bring a warmth to the site while not making it look too childish. The accessable language and easy to understand structure provides a positive and engaging experience.

I’ve been creating parts of the internet for more than 15 years and I’m completely in love with the digital medium. Design has the power to change the world and I work to be on the positive side of that change. My special skills are information architecture, user experience, mentoring and opening stuck jars.
