Working with me

I give a shit.

I am not a designer because I like making things pretty, I don't make websites so I can put little parts of them on dribbble or pinterest to get likes. I'm not in it for the fame (haha, web design fame).

I derive pleasure from a job done right and done well. I feel very strongly that the way something looks is only a small part of the finished product.  I am a designer because I can change how things are done, how they work and make them (and the world!) better.

Dieder Rams' principals for good design really resonate for me both professionally and personally.

Ten principals for good design

—Dieter Rams

Good design is innovative
Good design is honest
Good design makes a product useful
Good design is long lasting
Good desgin is aesthetic

Good design is thorough down to the last detail
Good design makes a product understandable
Good design is environmentally friendly
Good design is unobtrusive
Good design is as little design as possible.

I love developers.

This is a bit lame because I kinda used to be one, but learning to express a solution through code does something weird and awesome to your brain.

The relationship between development and design is absolutely crucial. Being able to communicate and collaborate with a development team is one of my strengths. My shady past as a developer means I can speak their language and I like to involve them early in the design process, not just for feasibility but also because their opinions and suggestions can help make a design great.

about-image1

I'm on the tools.

I love design, I love it so much I want to do it all the time. I've found that occasionally the grander your title, the less you're on the tools. And while I accept the need in some organisations for management positions to be more about administration and people management, my design leadership stems from the daily practical application of that skill.

I learn fast.

I'm not sure if it's because I design interfaces for a living, or due to some weird vitamins my mother took while she was pregnant. But I really understand digital interfaces. I very much enjoy the process of getting to know a new app. Discovering and learning Sketch a few years ago was like Christmas for me.

The elevator pitch.

I’ve been creating parts of the internet for more than 15 years and I’m completely in love with the digital medium. Design has the power to change the world and I work to be on the positive side of that change. My special skills are information architecture, user experience, mentoring and opening stuck jars.
