PGH Bricks & Pavers (owned by CSR Limited) provides the broadest range of bricks and pavers for residential, architectural and commercial applications on Australia’s East coast.
Selecting the style of the primary building material for your home is a stressful process. Typically, you would be given options by your builder in the form of a photograph, or if you're lucky a sample of a single brick. If you wanted more information, you would perhaps be given the address of some completed buildings using the brick you Ire interested in. You would then drive around to these seperate locations to see them.
This wasn't a new problem, PGH already had a digital product in place to attempt to solve this issue. However as a brick customer it looked overly technical and complex for little payoff - its imagery wasn't realistic enough to give confidence in the product. And for PGH, it required development every time they wanted to add products. Leading it to be usually out of date - product wise.

PGH approached Luminary with a duel pronged problem; develop a Visualiser that was easy for them to keep up to date while providing an excellent experience, allowing their customers to be confident in their product.
My role was principal designer and art director. I was responsible for developing the overall aesthetic and designing the interface.
I began by researching visualisation and digital product customisation tools. I found that the most successful of the batch kept the customer in a consistent visual aesthetic, no matter where they are in the journey.
Next I looked at what else PGH's customers were going to select the other materials of their home and found that Architecture magazines and blogs played a huge role. It was from that I drew inspiration, making the aesthetic of our interface mimic that of a designer magazine.
Finally, I knew I wanted our interface to work consistently from phones and desktop computers to VR goggles. I again looked at magazines, settling on a page overlay metaphor that translated well in all modalities. Designing for VR was a particular challenge, as I didn't have access to a set of goggles. Creating the experience involved watching videos of VR interfaces to understand the differences and limitations.
While developing the interface, I also worked with a team of 3D specialists, to ensure that our representations of the bricks and the buildings they were to be shown on was best in class.
The result is the PGH visualiser; where users can customise the building, the bricks – including the style of brick, bond pattern and mortar colour – as well as other features such as roofs, guttering fascias, garage doors, pavers and feature walls.
When satisfied with their selections, it’s easy for them to book an appointment with their local Selection Centre, generate a mood board and share using their preferred method.

I’ve been creating parts of the internet for more than 15 years and I’m completely in love with the digital medium. Design has the power to change the world and I work to be on the positive side of that change. My special skills are information architecture, user experience, mentoring and opening stuck jars.
